The beaches in Maldives are beautiful and pristine. Pic by Me
Rising barely a few feet above the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is a breathtaking archipelago of 26 natural atolls that stand as the crown of a submerged volcanic range. It is not just a destination; it is a paradise where villas hover over turquoise lagoons, offering an unparalleled escape from the real world.
As of now, it offers a free 30-day visa on arrival to all nationalities (except Israeli passport holders), meaning no pre-approved visa is required for tourists, and so it is a much sought after destinations for most tourists. However, as visa laws keep changing, please check the country’s official website before planning your trip.
Here are some things to keep in mind when you plan your trip.
Choosing your Accommodation

Deciding on the best Maldives accommodation involves balancing the budget, requirement and transfer methods. Choose between luxury private resort islands (secluded, expensive) or local islands (authentic, budget-friendly). Top factors are villa type (overwater vs. beach), house reef quality for snorkeling, all-inclusive dining options, and transfer time (speedboat - cheaper vs. seaplane- more expensive could be from $250 to $450). Confirm that transfer is included in your deal. Check for dining variety, spas, and child-friendly facilities if traveling with family.

Sometimes, luxury resorts offer special rates/ packages, especially during off season. Keep a look out for such offers.
High season (December to April) offers best weather, while low season (May to November) offers better deals.
Consider All-Inclusive Packages: Because options are limited on resort islands, purchasing an all-inclusive package often prevents excessive food and drink costs.
The water villa experience is amazing and you should try it (at least for a day) especially if the island has a house reef and you want to can snorkel. You can step down directly from the water villa to spot stunning marine creatures like manta rays and reef sharks (no, they don’t bite haha!). Some islands are artificial islands, and hence have a lower chance of spotting marine life check whether it is a natural island before booking a water villa. Or, these resorts might be cheaper and they take you to another island for snorkelling, which works too.
Beach villas are great too (and much cheaper as compared to water villas). Sometimes, on request, the hotels might take you on a small water villa tour if there are any empty ones.
If you are short on budget, you can think of a more budget friendly hotel at Male and take boat rides to different islands (island hopping) for different water experiences like snorkelling, swimming, etc.
Choosing Your Meal Plan:
Main Maldives Meal Plans

Sipping on a mocktail/ cocktail is a relaxing and refreshing experience. Pic : Me
Bed & Breakfast (BB): Only includes breakfast, offering flexibility but high costs for lunch/dinner.
Half Board (HB): Includes breakfast and dinner. Ideal for couples or those who prefer light lunches.
Full Board (FB): Includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It offers a balanced, cost-effective, and structured option for families and active travellers.
All-Inclusive (AI): Covers breakfast, lunch, dinner, unlimited drinks (alcohol/non-alcohol), and sometimes snacks/minibar. This is the best option for a worry-free, luxury, or family vacation.
Plus Plans (HB+, FB+): These plans typically add alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to meals.
I would suggest an All Inclusive Plan even if you do not take alcohol. It is always a great feeling to sip on a cool mocktail as you watch the sea, relaxing in your room or at the beach restaurant 🥰

Meals are usually sumptuous, with European, Continental and Asian varieties. Pic : Me
Important Things To Remember
Check your Airport

We walked out of immigration and this transfer was right in front of us 😁 . Yeah, no roads
Male’s Velana International Airport has opened a new, much larger terminal designed to ease congestion and speed up arrivals, with more check-in counters, immigration desks and aerobridges.
However, some flights still operate from the old terminal. Since every resort has their own pick up and drop service by speedboat or seaplane (no, you cannot hire an Uber to travel on the water 😅 ), double-check your ticket or confirm with your airline to avoid last-minute confusion.
Honeymoon package? They need proof

Pic : Me
If you’re booking a honeymoon package most resorts ask for proof, such as a marriage certificate or wedding invitation, before extending perks like room upgrades, celebratory dinners or complimentary wine. Some hotels might have a validity window (like travel within six to twelve months of your wedding).
Strictly Not Allowed:
Maldives is an Islamic country. So idols for worship, religious material offensive to Islam, pork and pork products are not allowed. Any kind of pornographic material including sex toys are also banned. Cigarettes: anyone born or after 1 January 2007 cannot legally buy or use tobacco in the country. While older travellers can still smoke in designated areas within resorts, local islands have stricter rules. Vaping is banned and devices will be confiscated at the airport. If you smoke, check your resort’s policies in advance.
Travelling with /family and Kids?

Some resorts are adults-only resorts and kids may not be allowed, or they might not be allowed in the overwater villas for safety reasons. So be sure to check with your resort before you book.
Most family friendly resorts have a lot of activities for kids, like kid clubs, kite flying, singing and dance, etc and they can take care of your kids too, as you relax on the beach or go for a swim
Why You Need To Go Soon

Pick: Me
The Maldives is widely considered one of the most vulnerable nations on Earth to climate change, with researchers projecting it could become largely uninhabitable by 2050 and entirely submerged by 2100 due to sea-level rise. As the lowest-lying country in the world, with over 80% of its land sitting less than one meter above sea level, rising ocean temperatures and accelerating sea-level rise (roughly 4mm annually) threaten to engulf its 1,200 coral islands, displace over 500,000 residents, and destroy a tourism-dependent economy.
In a desperate race against time, the Maldivian government is turning to aggressive adaptation measures, including the reclamation of artificial islands like Hulhumalé (which is built 2 meters higher than natural islands) and exploring the development of floating cities to keep the nation from disappearing beneath the Indian Ocean.
While we hope that the world is taking measures to see this does not happen, let us visit this beautiful country now, support local tourism and help in sustainable practices…
