The Steigenberger Hotel, Luxor. Pic by me

In my previous newsletter, I told how about the psychological tricks that hotels use to influence your bookings. Here are some insider tricks on how you can get the best prices.

A hotel room may look simple: a bed, a window, a quiet place to sleep.

But behind that door is an entire ecosystem of data, algorithms, and strategy deciding what that room should cost tonight.

Don’t assume the hotel is being unpredictable. It’s simply responding to the invisible rhythm of demand. Here’s how you can get the best prices.

1. Check Prices More Than Once

Hotel prices fluctuate constantly.

Revenue management systems update rates based on demand, meaning prices may change multiple times a day.

Checking a hotel a few times over a day or two can sometimes reveal a lower rate.

Skift notes that dynamic pricing software allows hotels to react instantly to market demand, which is why rates often shift so frequently.

2. Book at the “Sweet Spot”

Research across the hospitality industry suggests the ideal booking window for many hotels is about 2–6 weeks before arrival.

Book too early and you might miss discounts.

Book too late and prices may rise if demand spikes.

Of course, this varies by destination and season.

3. Compare Direct vs Booking Platforms

Sometimes hotel websites offer:

  • lower member rates

  • breakfast packages

  • free upgrades

  • flexible cancellation

Meanwhile online travel agencies may show discounted inventory.

Checking both sources can occasionally reveal different pricing.

4. Look at the Local Calendar

Hotels adjust prices aggressively during:

  • festivals

  • conferences

  • sports events

  • holidays

A citywide event can double hotel prices overnight.

Before booking, quickly search:
“Events in [city] during my dates.”

It might explain the price jump.

5. Try the “Polite Email”

This is surprisingly effective.

If you're staying multiple nights or celebrating something special, a friendly message to the hotel sometimes leads to:

  • better room placement

  • complimentary upgrades

  • small perks

Hotels value thoughtful guests, especially those who appreciate the experience.
